This is the first recording of the original score from one of Broadway's
gems. “My Funny Valentine [Lyrics]”, “The Lady is a Tramp [Lyrics]”,
“Johnny One Note [Lyrics]”, and “I Wish I Were In Love Again”
all came from this show (when was the last time you saw a Broadway show
with four hit tunes!), an affectionate and mildly satiric look at a fictional
town’s adolescent population, abandoned by their parents, who are
forced to fend for themselves. More than financial and amorous matters concerned
them: these kids wrestled with philosophical, political, and moral issues,
sang love duets about psychic phenomena and fought over principles. (Forget
about the MGM movie with JUDY and Mickey; the plot was re-written and all
but two of the songs were dropped!)
“How luxurious to have one of the most luscious of Rodgers and
Hart scores in its near-entirety, with original or near-original orchestrations…this
Babes in Arms is a happy delivery, especially with the original sheet
music design wrapped tenderly around it.” —Opera News
